Wirelessly migrate data between Samsung Galaxy devices

Transferring contacts and personal data from your old phone to a new one used to be a cumbersome ordeal. These days, it's a much simpler process and in some cases, you don't even need cables or wires to copy your data.

On Android phones, just having a Google account takes care of your contacts, bookmarks, apps, and more. However, it won't help you copy old SMS/MMS messages, pictures, music, and other files. For Samsung Galaxy users, there's an easy way to get those files over to your new Galaxy device. Samsung's Smart Switch Mobile app lets you wirelessly transfer data from your old Galaxy device to your new Galaxy device. Here's how:

Step 1: Install the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile app on both of your Galaxy devices.

Step 2: Position the two Galaxy devices within 50 cm of each other, then launch the app on both devices. Tap on the Connect button from one of them to initiate the connection.

Step 3: Once the devices are connected, you'll see a list of data types that you can choose to transfer. Select the data you want to copy over, then tap the Transfer button.

Step 4: On your target device, you'll be prompted to accept the transfer. Tap OK to continue.

That's it. When the transfer completes, tap on the Done button to exit.

How to hide apps on Apple TV

Regardless of what you call the icons on your Apple TV -- apps or channels -- you're likely starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with the extra icons for channels you don't use on your Apple TV home screen. With the most recent addition of four new channels just this morning, I know my home screen is anything but organized.

At first glance it would appear, beyond the ability to rearrange the icons, there's no other method to organize your Apple TV screen. Thankfully, that is wrong. There's actually a quick and easy solution to fix this problem.

Originally covered by Mac OS X Hints back in June, hiding channel icons is possible after digging through a few settings menus.

To get started, on your Apple TV select the Settings icon, then General, followed by Parental Controls.

  • There's no need to enable Parental Controls if you currently have it disabled. Instead, scroll down below the grayed-out area until you're scrolling through the list of channel names. Next to each name will currently be "show." Clicking on the name will change show to "hide," which in turn removes the app icon from your home screen.
With minimal effort you've just eliminated any unused channels from your view, and tidied up your home screen in just a few clicks. Of course revealing the same icons requires you to visit the same menu and select the channel again.

Thank you, Apple, for including this feature, but shouldn't it be easier to find?

How to control your PC from your iPad for free

Last week, the folks at Parallels unveiled Access, a remote-control utility for Windows and Mac that lets you access either of those desktop environments via an iPad app.

The program earned gushing coverage from the likes The New York Times and was reviewed favorably right here at CNET.

There's just one small wrinkle: Parallels Access costs $79.99 per year per computer. That's a pretty steep price even if you have only one desktop. Fortunately, there are alternatives that give you very similar functionality for a much lower price: $0. One of them, TeamViewer, is free for personal use. And it's available not just for iPad, but also for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone 8. (On the desktop side, it's compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.) Let's see how you can get your iPad (or other mobile device) connected to your PC without spending a penny.

On your desktop, download and install TeamViewer. You'll note that you have three installation options:

  • Install A full installation of the TeamViewer client, with all available options.
  • Install to control this computer later from remote If you want to be able to access your desktop remotely, without having to input a code (also known as "unattended access"), choose this option.
  • Run only The software runs, but nothing gets installed. This is a great option if you want to keep TeamViewer on, say, a flash drive. But it doesn't allow for unattended access.
Whatever installation option you choose, be sure to choose "personal / non-commercial use" in the bottom half of the setup window.

Now install TeamViewer on your mobile device. Run the app, then enter the ID number shown in the desktop client, followed by the password. If you set up unattended access, you'll need only the password (which you created) for future sessions.

Once you're connected, you'll immediately see your desktop on your device screen. Things may look a little different if your desktop had to switch resolutions to accommodate the remote connection, but ultimately you've now got touch-powered control over your PC or Mac.

It'll take a bit of practice to learn how to use your fingers in place of a mouse. For example, finger-taps work the way mouse-clicks do, but only if you've dragged your cursor to where you want to click. Scrolling requires two fingers, same as with a lot of laptop touchpads. Zooming is a pinch affair, same as on the iPad proper.

For help and access to TeamViewer tools, tap the little round keyboard icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. It brings up a toolbar, which on the iPad looks like this.

TeamViewer may not "appify" your desktop programs the way Parallels Access does, but it does give you easy, cost-free remote access to your PC or Mac -- great for running programs you can't get on your phone or tablet, retrieving a file you left behind, checking your e-mail archive, and so on.

How to create a Windows 8 USB recovery drive

A bootable Windows 8 recovery drive can help you repair or restore your PC if and when problems arise. Though you can create a recovery DVD, USB flash drives are much more convenient and are fairly inexpensive.

Here's how to create a Windows 8 USB recovery drive for your PC:

Step 1: From the Windows 8 Start screen, type "recovery," then choose Settings to see the search results under Settings. Select "Create a recovery drive" to begin the recovery drive tool.

Step 2: When the recovery drive tool appears, check the box next to "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" if you want the recovery tools that came with your PC to be included in the recovery drive. If the selection is grayed out, that means your PC doesn't have a recovery partition. Keep in mind that if you do copy the recovery partition, you'll need at least a 16GB USB flash drive. Without it, you can make do with just 256MB. Click Next to continue.

Step 3: Make sure that the USB flash drive you're using is empty and that it shows up in the list of available drives. Any data left on the flash drive will be deleted by the recovery drive tool. When you get to the end of the wizard, click the Create button and wait a couple of minutes for the drive to be created.

That's it. Now you can boot the Windows 8 USB recovery drive and perform a refresh, reset, system restore, system image recovery, and an automatic repair.

Migrate data from your old Android device to the Moto X

Upgrading from an older, slower, not nearly as good-looking Android device to a newer, faster, better-looking Moto X isn't a bad decision. Often the only drawback to changing devices is the process of transferring important information such as text messages and call logs to the new device.

Fortunately for Moto X owners who are coming from another Android device, the process is as simple as downloading an app and tapping on a couple of buttons.

To begin migrating your data to the Moto X, you'll first need to install Motorola's Migrate on your old device. It's available to download in the Play store.

Once you have Migrate installed, launch the Migrate app on your Moto X and pair the two devices. You'll do this by scanning a QR code on your Moto X with your old phone. Both devices will have to be on the same Wi-Fi network in order to communicate.

After the two devices are paired, the sync process will begin. You can expect your text messages, call history, SIM contacts, Media, and finally the volume & brightness settings to be transferred.

The time it takes to transfer your data depends on the amount of data you have on your old phone. You'll be able to use both devices while the transfer takes place. There will be a progress indicator in the notification tray to keep you up-to-date.

After the transfer finishes, you'll find your information on the Moto X just as it was on your old phone.

How to get 1GB extra dropbox space just for using mailbox

You remember Mailbox, right? The free iOS app that was set to revolutionize the way we e-mail. With options to snooze and postpone e-mails from being visible in our Inbox, it was sure to be a hit! And it was; after a long list of users waiting to gain access to the service, Dropbox decided it needed to acquire Mailbox.

Fast-forward to today, and you'll find an iPad version of the app along with Dropbox integration (naturally) within the app. And with the Dropbox integration in mind, if you connect your Dropbox account to Mailbox, you'll automagically gain 1GB of free storage on your Dropbox account.Even if you don't plan on using Mailbox (which only works with Gmail accounts right now) you can at least sign in and connect the two apps, then delete Mailbox and go back to business as usual.

Connecting Mailbox to Dropbox is dead simple:

  • Download and install Mailbox on an iOS device if you don't already have it installed.
  • After logging in to your Gmail account, navigate to Mailbox's settings and select the "Dropbox" option. Then tap on "Add Dropbox Account."
  • If you have the Dropbox app installed on the same device, the app will launch and prompt you to grant Mailbox permission to access your Dropbox account. If not, you'll have to log in to Dropbox and authorize the app the old-fashioned way.
  • Profit?
As soon as you grant Mailbox access to your Dropbox account, your storage allotment will increase by 1GB. If you already have the two services connected, unlink them in the Mailbox settings menu and reauthorize. The bonus storage should then show up.

How to get Android 4.3 to your Google Nexus Device

Google unveiled the second generation Nexus 7 tablet with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday. The update is an incremental one when it comes to user facing changes, but brings a number of new features under the hood.

While the updated OS will ship with the new Nexus 7 tablet, Google has announced that it has started rolling out the Android 4.3 update to Nexus devices including the original Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus 10 tablet, and Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus smartphones.

The update will be available over the air through the Settings menu on the devices. It will roll out gradually and it could take weeks before it reaches all devices. Our Galaxy Nexus smartphone has not received the update, at the time of writing this post.

You can also force your device to check for updates by going to the Apps menu from the Settings, and finding the Google Services Framework app. You can then tap on 'Clear data' and 'Force stop' options and check for the update again from the About settings menu. This doesn't harm your device in any way and is a completely safe option. However, it's not guaranteed that you'll get the update after performing these steps.

For the more adventurous, the full
factory images of Android 4.3 are also available through the Android Open Source Project online, on the Google Developers website. However, you'll need to flash these images manually using special tools and unless you're pretty sure of what you're doing, we'd recommend waiting for the official update to hit your device.

Hugo Barra, Vice President of Android product management at Google also announced that the stock Android Google editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One would receive the update as well, though he did not specify a timeline.

How to add logic to search results in OS -X

By SheebaSudeep

Whenever you nned to search for any  in OS X, you can use the Spotlight menu or perform a Finder search routine. Finder, unlike the Spotlight menu, is offering a number of filtering options which can be added to your search to narrow down results, which can even  be saved  as canned searches that Apple calls Smart
Folders.

Searching with logical operators in OS X
Adding logic to searches, in this case, will yield all PDF documents modified within the last week, excluding files that have the name "test" or "TimeSheet."

To create a filtered search, all you need to do is simply press Command-F in the Finder, and the foremost window will convert to a search window, or you can start entering a search term in the Finder search bar at the top right of each window.

With the search window active, you can choose to search the computer ("This Mac"), the current folder, or mounted shares for specific files. Below this search scope, you can add a number of metadata filters to narrow your search results. The search may have Kind set to "Any," though you can designate audio files, PDFs, folders, and images, and you can click the plus button to add more filters.

By default when you add more filters they are all included, so filter 1 and filter 2 would both be applied to the search results. However, you can apply different logic operators such as "or" and "not" to the search results.

To do this, hold the Option key when clicking the plus button, and filters added will be placed under an operator selector, where you can have the results include "any" of the following filters (logical "or"), have it exclude the items found in the filters (logical "not"), or go with the default "all" inclusive (logical "and").

In this way, you can for example build a search result that will include all PDF documents that were opened within the last week, but not located within a specific folder, and then nest a couple of filters to exclude files with one or more key words in their names.

The possibilities for customizing searches in this manner are almost endless. And as with any other custom search, you can save these searches so you can quickly access them, if needed.

In addition to smart searches, you can apply logic to searches in the Spotlight menu. Simply include capital AND and OR. For example, to locate a file with a name or contents containing either "MacBook" or "Apple," you would search for "MacBook OR Apple" in Spotlight.
