A computer chip that mimics the human brain

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, are developing a computer chip that mimics the human brain.

Today's computing chips are incredibly complex and contain billions of nano-scale transistors, allowing for fast, high-performance computers, pocket-sized smartphones that far outpace early desktop computers, and an explosion in handheld tablets, the researchers said.

Despite their ability to perform thousands of tasks in the blink of an eye, none of these devices even come close to rivalling the computing capabilities of the human brain. But a Boise State University research team could soon change that.

Electrical and computer engineering faculty Elisa Barney Smith, Kris Campbell and Vishal Saxena have taken on the challenge of developing a new kind of computing architecture that works more like a brain than a traditional digital computer.

"By mimicking the brain's billions of interconnections and pattern recognition capabilities, we may ultimately introduce a new paradigm in speed and power, and potentially enable systems that include the ability to learn, adapt and respond to their environment," said Barney Smith, principal investigator of the study.

The project's success rests on a memristor - a resistor that can be programmed to a new resistance by application of electrical pulses and remembers its new resistance value once the power is removed.
Memristors were first hypothesised to exist in 1972 (in conjunction with resistors, capacitors and inductors) but were fully realised as nano-scale devices only in the last decade.

The team's research builds on recent work from scientists who have derived mathematical algorithms to explain the electrical interaction between brain synapses and neurons.

"By employing these models in combination with a new device technology that exhibits similar electrical response to the neural synapses, we will design entirely new computing chips that mimic how the brain processes information," said Barney Smith.

These new chips will consume power at an order of magnitude lower than current computing processors, despite the fact that they match existing chips in physical dimensions.

This will open the door for ultra low-power electronics intended for applications with scarce energy resources, such as in space, environmental sensors or biomedical implants.

Microsoft to release Windows 8.1 on October 17

Windows-8.1-2.jpg

Consumers waiting for Microsoft's revamped version of its latest Windows operating system will be able to get the software beginning Oct. 17.

The release date for Windows 8.1 is nearly a year after the debut of Windows 8, a dramatic overhaul of the operating system that has been powering most personal computers for decades.

Microsoft Corp. unveiled its plans for Windows 8.1 three months ago, but hadn't set a release date until Wednesday. At test version of Windows 8.1 that may still include some bugs has been available since late June.

Windows 8 represented Microsoft's attempt to create an operating system that works well on tablet computers, as well as on laptop and desktop machines.

But the overhaul confused and frustrated many people, resulting in disappointing sales of devices running on Windows 8. One research firm, International Data Corp., has even blamed Windows 8 for deepening the slump in PC sales as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to connect to the Internet.

Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., also absorbed a $900 million charge to its most recent quarterly earnings to account for its expected losses from a company-produced tablet, called Surface, which relies on a slimmed-down version of Windows 8.

Windows 8.1 is Microsoft's attempt to make the operating system easier and more appealing to use. It will be available as a free update to owners of Windows 8 machines.

The first laptops and PCs featuring Windows 8.1 already installed are scheduled to go on sale Oct. 18.

Internet Explorer 11 developer preview now available for Windows 7

Microsoft has released a developer preview version of Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) for Windows 7.

As promised by the Redmond giant after it released the consumer preview version of Windows 8.1 with the new iteration of the browser last month, the browser can be downloaded from Microsoft's Window's website.

Microsoft announced the development on its MSDN blog and said that Internet Explorer for Windows 7 offers the same improved performance, faster page load times, new standards support for next generation sites, and completely revised F12 developer tools, that the browser's Windows 8.1 version offers.

According to Microsoft, IE11 is the first browser to natively decode JPG images in real-time on the GPU (Graphics processor), that allows web pages to load faster and use less memory, reducing power consumption and improving battery life of devices. IE11 also boasts of being the first browser to render text on the GPU. Microsoft also claims that the updated version of Internet Explorer is the first browser to implement the W3C Resource Priorities standard allowing developers to specify which parts of the page are important and need to be loaded first. It also supports HTML5 link prefetching and pre-rendering, letting developers guide the browser anticipate where users are expected to go next and get those pages ready.

The update brings some under the hood changes including support for hardware accelerated 3D web graphics with support for WebGL. It also supports plug-in free HTML5 video and the latest standards for closed captioning, adaptive streaming, wherein the quality of the video is adjusted depending on the available bandwidth, and rights management.

Microsoft has also made improvements to its JavaScript engine, Chakra with Internet Explorer 11.

According to the company, IE11 on Windows 7 is 4 percent faster than IE10, and nearly 30 percent faster than Chrome in JavaScript benchamark tests like SunSpider.

IE11 also features a completely overhauled suite of in-browser F12 developer tools. These tools help Web developers diagnose and optimize their apps quickly and efficiently, a sper Microsoft.

The browser's Windows 8.1 avatar offers additional features optimised for touch-screens including  swipe gestures for going forward and back and supports Windows 8.1's side by side mode allowing users to browse two websites on different instances of the browser on one screen.

As with any preview software, users are advised not to use the software as their primary browser, as it's likely to have some bugs.

By Technocafepro

Hp has announced that they are offering Laptops with two years of 4G service.Yes .You read it right.4G service
This compact HP Pavilion is made even sweeter with two years of T-Mobile 4G service thrown in.

Through tomorrow, or until supplies run out, HP has the refurbished Pavilion DM1-4310NR 11.6-inch laptop for $259.99 shipped. Actually, that's not so unusual. But this is: It includes two years of 4G service via T-Mobile.Two free years of service! That's kind of WOW.  But there is a catch of sorts: You're limited to just 200MB of data per month. Get a loaded Dell desktop for $699.99

    By SheebaSudeep

I think if you're shopping for a desktop these days, you should be looking for a system that can go the distance, that can run everything you throw at it today, tomorrow, and even five years down the road.

Here's a great candidate: While supplies last, DealFisher has the Dell XPS 8500 Core i7 desktop for $699.99 shipped. It sells elsewhere for $899.

The Dell XPS 8500 is about as loaded as a $700 desktop can get. The  XPS 8500, a 3.4GHz Intel Core i7-3770 processor, 12GB of RAM, and a 2TB hard drive, for starters.

Though it is not yet clear what is there inside ,on the outside you get a whopping 10 USB ports -- four of them USB 3.0. As for video, Dell supplies DVI, DisplayPort, and HDMI connections.

What is good about the  design of the tower is that it  has upward-angled memory-card slots and a little indented tray on the top with a couple of the USB ports -- a convenient place to lay your phone, camera, or whatever else you're plugging in.Because the system is new, not refurbished, it comes with a full one-year warranty.

    Samsung's Ativ Book 9 Lite: A budget 13-inch Windows 8 touch-screen laptop (hands-on)

    By SheebaSudeep

Update: Samsung has announced U.S. price, spec, and availability details for the Ativ Book 9 Lite. The U.S. version comes in one set $799 configuration, but two colors, "Mineral Ash Black" or "Marble White." The single config includes 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and the same 1,366x768-pixel touch screen detailed below in our original hands-on coverage.

The attractive feature is the custom CPU, which Samsung boases as  Quad Core Processor. These chips include AMD's excellent Radeon integrated graphics as well.

The Book 9 Lite's $799 price puts it in the same ballpark as several laptops with similar RAM, SSD, and touch-screen specs, but with Intel's mainstream Core i5 CPU. Some of those, including systems from Toshiba and Acer, aren't quite as thin or upscale-looking as the Book 9 Lite, but they're close.

Another potential concern is battery life. Intel-powered systems have outperformed comparable AMD ones for a few generations now, and the latest Intel CPUs, formerly code-named Haswell, are starting to filter down to budget laptops, and deliver very impressive battery life in our tests so far.

We'll have to wait until we get a review unit of the Book 9 Lite to test the performance and battery life of its white-label AMD CPU. If you're already interested, it's available to preorder now, and will be in retail stores starting July 28.

    Design

Outwardly, the Ativ Book 9 Lite is obviously seen as a sibling of the more pricey Book 9 Plus. They're both 13-inch laptops and both share the same wavy 'folded magazine-style' edging. The key difference is that the Lite has a plastic shell, rather than the aluminum body of its brother.

The glossy white plastic of the model I was able to try out was quite attractive and reminiscent of some of Samsung's similarly glossy Galaxy Tabs. It was a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but a quick wipe with a cloth should solve that. The plastic body is likely to be a little more susceptible to knocks and bumps than the metal Plus, but it still felt reassuringly well put together in my brief hands-on.

At almost 17mm thick, it's quite a bit chubbier than the Plus. It weighs 1.44kg (3.17 pounds), which is marginally heavier, too, but not by enough that you'd really notice. It's portable enough to slip into a bag and can be comfortably carried around throughout the day without risking spinal injuries.

    Screen

Like the Plus, the Ativ Book 9 Lite packs a 13-inch touch screen. It doesn't share the same monster resolution as the Plus, plumping for a lesser 1,366x768 pixels. That's really the minimum I'd expect to see on a machine of this size.

    Windows and specs

It's running the full version of Windows 8, which turns out that you're able to install all the standard desktop PC software you want -- great news, as the Windows 8 Marketplace still isn't exactly well stocked. Microsoft will be launching a major upgrade to Windows 8 later this year, but has said that all existing users will be able to download it for free. You'll be able to immediately upgrade this laptop to the latest software as soon as it's available.

It's powered by a quad-core processor, which interestingly is a custom Samsung chip, rather than the more usual Intel processors typically found in Samsung 's laptops. The company wasn't forthcoming with details about the chip, nor did it give any indication as to how it's likely to perform against other laptops. We'll have to wait and see exactly what it's capable of when we give it the full review treatment.

A flash memory-based SSD with 256GB of space will be on board to take care of your storage needs and should ensure fast boot-up and resume times.

OutlookThe Ativ Book 9 Lite doesn't share the same high-end specs or fancy metal build as its posh brother, but it's an attractive thing nonetheless that will hopefully arrive with a considerably cut-down price tag.
